New Year, New Focus on Your Health
As the new year begins, it’s the perfect time to commit to preventative care as part of your resolutions for a healthier life. Preventative care encompasses regular check-ups, screenings, immunizations, and lifestyle adjustments that help identify and address potential health issues before they become severe. We spoke with OCH’s Dr. Vijay Kannam, a preventative care expert, to get a better idea of what this type of proactive action means for individuals and providers like him.
Early Detection & Healthy Habits
“As preventative care providers, we work closely with an organization called, USPSTF (The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force) this is an independent panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine. Their assessments help us identify effective strategies for early detection and management of diseases”, says DR. Kannam. “Following USPSTF recommendations is crucial for identifying cancers like breast, cervical, colon, and lung cancer in asymptomatic individuals, enabling early treatment before the disease progresses. Screenings are tailored to factors such as age, sex/gender, and behavioral risks”.
Preventative care also includes staying up-to-date with vaccinations, understanding your family health history, and making meaningful lifestyle adjustments. Adopting habits such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and managing stress significantly contributes to your overall well-being.
Additionally, prioritizing preventative care offers numerous benefits, from reducing health risks and lowering healthcare costs to improving overall quality of life. Collaborate with healthcare providers like Dr. Kannam to stay informed about recommendations and involve your family in this journey. This new year, make preventative care your resolution to achieve lasting health and vitality, creating a brighter and healthier future for yourself and your loved ones.
